Fire Marshal Nate Schanlaber, whose duties include assessing each downtown building’s structural condition and level of public safety, has currently researched several building’s history, construction, and use. Schanlaber has been describing his findings in an ongoing series of reports.
It’s also his job to make recommendations for needed building improvements or repairs, and work with property owners to get them implemented. These buildings are referred to as “legacy structures,” because of the high level of interest that local residents have in the history of downtown and the impact that these buildings have on the past, present, and future of Hot Springs. With a focus upon structural integrity and fire safety, each building has been extensively photographed and its condition examined.
