Public Notice

Ordinance Regulating the Size and Installations of Grease Traps, Oil Separators, Interceptors and Grease Recovery Devices (GRD).

The purpose of the grease waste ordinance is to enable Hot Springs Municipal Utilities to comply with its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit conditions as administered by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ).

Improper disposal of oil and grease can impact food preparation and carwash/automotive service businesses in many ways. If oil and grease builds up in the drains and sewer lines, sewage can back up into the floor drains, restrooms, and sinks. It can then expose people inside oil and grease waste producing establishments, other businesses, and homes to raw sewage.

Excessive oil and grease and other harmful wastes that are released into the city's sanitary sewer collection system can create maintenance problems within the sewer collection system and the wastewater treatment plant. These problems result in high maintenance, repair, and cleanup costs.

The conditions outlined in the grease waste ordinance are design to prevent incidents listed above from happening. For more information and a copy of the grease waste ordinance, contact the city's pretreatment coordinator at 262-1881, #15.
