Narrative Continued:

A network of approximately 600 miles of wastewater lines collects sewage from service areas in the city and county. Because of the nature of lake terrain, more than 120 pump stations and 4500 grinder pumps transport the sewage to the wastewater treatment plant, where it is treated and then discharged into Lake Catherine.

Sludge from the wastewater treatment process is recycled into rich, finely textured compost, which is available to the public. The city compost facility is located next to the wastewater treatment plant at 320 Davidson Drive. Hot Springs was the first Arkansas city to implement a composting program. For daily recorded information on city compost availability, facility hours, fees and directions, call 321-6869.

In the near future, the city will add a new wastewater treatment facility to service the area west of Lake Hamilton. This facility will be designed to treat approximately one million gallons of wastewater daily, with the capability to be expanded to treat up to three million gallons daily.

The Utilities Department strives to provide citizens with quality drinking water and a safe living environment with the proper treatment and disposal of wastewater. Most of its employees are state licensed water and wastewater operators. They continue to improve their skills through state certified training.
