Pre-registration is now being accepted for “Shop with the Chef” featuring Chef Diana Bratton of Café 1217, to be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 15 at the Historic Downtown Farmers’ Market. The market is located in the Transportation Plaza near Orange Street.
Chef Bratton will prepare smoked butternut squash soup and a farm fresh salad. This free event is limited to 20 participants. Advance registration is recommended by calling 321-6806.
Growing up in southern Texas, Bratton watched her mother prepare hearty, satisfying meals from scratch for the family of eleven. Oranges and avocadoes, plentiful in the yard outside, were menu staples. Bratton would cook dinner for her father, who worked late on weekdays. Inspired by color and the aroma of fresh herbs, she took her love for cooking a step further and took culinary training at El Centro College in Dallas and Napa Valley Culinary Institute in California. As owner and founder of Café 1217, the sunny, upbeat “gourmet to go” dine-in café and catering company on Malvern Avenue in Hot Springs, she has been featured on the Food Network, in Southern Living magazine and on a program with television host and professional garden designer P.Allen Smith. Bratton and her husband, Shane, reside in Hot Springs.
Participants will pick up a complimentary cup of gourmet coffee from Willoughby House Tea Room and accompany Bratton on a tour of the market as she chooses fresh produce from local vendors. She will demonstrate how to prepare the dishes and give participants a taste. The event is co-sponsored by Willoughby House and Mountain Valley Spring Water.
The market operates each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 6 a.m. until 11 a.m. Free adjacent parking is available, and new vendors are welcome. For more information, contact Terry Payne, city public information officer, 321-6806.
