Each year, more individuals, schools, and other groups are becoming involved in the International Day of Peace. Although International Day of Peace is September 21, local observance will begin with the kickoff event, “Communicate Peace,” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 20 at Oaklawn Visual and Performing Arts School, 301 Oaklawn Boulevard.
The Hot Springs High Junior Naval Officers Training Corps will present the colors. The event will include interactive peace activities for persons of all ages, a drama, A Day of Peace, with music performed by students of Oaklawn School; a performance by the band “Daylight and Darkness”; and an address, “Communicate Peace,” by Juvenile Judge Vicki S. Cook.
Interactive activities at the kickoff event will include drumming with Gary Fleck, a peace story-telling center, and constructing peace bracelets.
In preparation and support for the local observance of International Day of Peace, Poets of the Round Table will write original peace poems to be printed on the Saturday prior to and the Saturday following Peace Day; faith groups and civic organizations will offer prayers for local and international peace prior to September 21; and Lake Hamilton Intermediate School art classes will construct flags representing the 200 countries that celebrate International Day of Peace. The flags will be displayed at Oaklawn School.
National Park Community College will also host a ceremony at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, September 21 that will include a message of peace, a song by the NPCC Singers, and planting of a white pine, a Native American symbol of peace.
The local observance of the International Day of Peace is co-sponsored by R.E.G.A.R.D. (Recognizing Everyone’s Gifts and Respecting Diversity) and the City of Hot Springs. The goal of the event is that all citizens will give serious consideration to the need for peace in the community and the world by making September 21 a day free of prejudice and violence, and participating in the kickoff event and other related activities.
