LOCAL BAND FEATURED AT PEACE CELEBRATION

The local band “Daylight and Darkness,” which recently participated in the CBS Early Morning Show amateur band competition “Living Room
. . . Live,” will perform at the kickoff event of the local observance of the International Day of Peace. The event will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 20 at the Oaklawn Visual and Performing Arts School, 301 Oaklawn Boulevard.

The band members are Ashley Layfield, Emily Breshears, Layfield’s younger sister, and Alyssa Waldrop. Layfield is a recent college graduate, and Breshears and Waldrop are students at Fountain Lake School. Although “Daylight and Darkness” did not win the overall competition, Layfield reports that is was very exciting to participate and that the group was fortunate to be among the three finalists in the CBS competition.

Interactive peace activities will include Drumming for Peace, A Peace Story Center, the making of Peace Bracelets, and making Doves for Peace.

Also participating in the kick-off event will be the Hot Springs High School Junior Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps, presenting the colors; the Oaklawn School String Orchestra, playing the Star Spangled Banner; Judge Vicki S. Cook, delivering an address entitled “Communicate Peace in Garland County,” the Oaklawn School Choir, singing “Peace on Earth,” and the Oaklawn School Theatre Troupe presenting the play, “One Day in Peace.”

On display at Oaklawn School will be 200 flags constructed by Lake Hamilton Intermediate School art classes. The flags represent the countries that celebrate the International Day of Peace.

Peace celebrations are also scheduled at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, September 21 at National Park Community College, and at 1 p.m. that day at St. John’s Catholic School, 583 West Grand Avenue.

The public is encouraged to make September 21 a day free of prejudice and violence, and participate in peace related activities in the community. The International Day of Peace is sponsored locally by R.E.G.A.R.D. (Recognizing Everyone’s Gifts and Respecting Diversity) and the City of Hot Springs.
