At the Hot Springs Board of Directors’ work session on Tuesday, September 30, the city’s Public Works Department and Entergy jointly presented an overview on the proposed construction of a new water intake structure in the area near Carpenter Dam in order to meet the needs of Hot Springs’ growing customer base.
The project, currently in the conceptual stage, would allow the City of Hot Springs to utilize Lake Hamilton as a future water source. In response to the city’s request to increase water allocation limits, Entergy has indicated its willingness to enter into an agreement with the city to construct a new municipal water intake structure adjacent to Carpenter Dam with an allocation limit of 30 million gallons per day (MGD).
According to Jacobs Engineers, the city’s municipal water use is increasing at the rate of 4% per year. Entergy, which operates lakes Hamilton and Catherine, is willing to cooperate with the city in the construction of a water intake structure in a manner that would protect and enhance the scenic, recreation and environmental values of the project. Entergy has historically played an integral role in the area’s tourism, recreation and overall economic growth, particularly through the land donation which resulted in the development of Entergy Park in partnership with the city’s Parks & Recreation Department.
Future action steps will include feasibility studies, surveys and public input meetings. For more information, contact Public Works, 321-6861.
