Between April 1-30, 2022, Hot Springs residents can pledge to save water at www.mywaterpledge.com.
In doing so, they will add to Hot Springs’ total pledge count and can nominate a charity in Hot Springs for a chance to win a Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Each participant will also be entered to win from thousands of eco-friendly prizes, including $3,000 toward their home utility bills, home irrigation makeovers and environmentally-friendly cleaning products. Only cities with the most residents making pledges will qualify for the more than $50,000 in prize drawings.
The annual Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, presented by the Wyland Foundation and Toyota, encourages residents across America to make small changes in their lives to better manage our water resources and improve the health of our ocean, lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands.

Water conservation efforts by the City of Hot Springs
The City of Hot Springs Utilities Department is committed to providing a safe healthful living environment through quality water treatment and distribution, which includes planning for future water sources and conserving water through reducing the amount of unbillable water.
These conservation efforts include recent initiatives that are identifying and quantifying water losses, without disrupting the system, for greater efficiency with expected total projected savings of more than $2.4 million in unbilled water and energy savings.
Utilities contracted with Pure Technologies in 2021 to install virtual demand metered areas (vDMA) and use insertion electromagnetic flow meters to identify water loss by comparing the reading with the advanced metering infrastructure meters that were added in 2010. The City already uses advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) to monitor water meters. Pure Technologies’ software uses the same technology as the AMI system, and the two blend seamlessly. By monitoring the water moving into the various pressure zones and comparing that to what is metered for customers within those isolated zones, Utilities is getting a better idea where water is being lost, be it inaccurate metering or leaks. That data provide a focus for more detailed leak detection activities. In 2022, Utilities is installing more main line meters, creating more vDMA zones, which will continue for four more years to complete all the zones needed to cover the whole system. This will provide all the information needed to monitor the water system moving forward.
Also added in 2021 was Hidden Revenue Locator (HRL) technology through Sensus Analytics. This program will quantify apparent water losses for the entire system of more than 33,000 meters to contribute to more efficient and proactive meter asset management.
Yet another new program involves the use of Permalogger sensors to located leaks. Beginning with 30 sensors in zone 4, a leak of approximately 20,000 gallons a day was located and fixed. The Permaloggers will be rotated through the zones to locate additional leaks for repair.
