Special Operations
Special Operations is the section under our Field Operations Bureau that manages the city's traffic, investigates major traffic accidents, and handles special event coordination such as parades, bike rallies and festivals. When the need arises this group also provides occasional support for patrol shifts by helping to direct traffic or implement road closures and detours due to major incidents such as fires or severe weather and of course they can always be counted on to step in to supplement manpower, provide backup assistance or help with any regular law enforcement duties.
In addition to it's normal functions Special Operations is also the home of our Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), the Crisis Negotiations Team and our Police K9 Unit. Our SWAT team is on call 24-hours a day to provide patrol officers and detectives with enhanced tactical support as needed. The Crisis Negotiations Team, trained in crisis resolution, is also on call 24 hours a day in the event that a skilled technician is needed to assist in negotiating a peaceful resolution to a crisis situation.
The department's two K-9 Unit teams, which utilize police service dogs specially-trained to assist law enforcement officers in their efforts to locate narcotics, track fleeing suspects, locate lost articles, search buildings for concealed criminals or intruders and other tasks, perform normal patrol duties on a regular basis and like the other Special Operations on-call units they are also available around the clock if their services are needed.
Finally, Special Operations screens all off-duty employment opportunities and all off-duty officer requests before those positions are sanctioned. Submitting a request for the security services of off-duty police officers for public or private events is a simple process that anyone can do from the comfort of their own home or business. Simply go to our Online Forms page and fill out the interactive Off-Duty Employment Request Form and your request will be received by Special Operations electronically.
