[ARCHIVED] Statement from City about Central Avenue shooting

Yesterday, on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at 12:33 p.m., the Hot Springs Police Department received numerous calls regarding a man causing a disturbance and threatening bystanders. Officers of the Hot Springs Police Department promptly responded and found the suspect armed. Officer First Class Jonathan Smith was struck twice by gunfire, and the suspect was shot by officers.

Officer Smith has been released from the hospital. The suspect remains in the hospital in critical condition. The Arkansas State Police and Garland County Sheriff’s Department are leading the investigation into yesterday’s events.

“The Hot Springs Police Department acted in a swift and decisive manner to end an extremely dangerous situation,” said Bill Burrough, city manager of Hot Springs. “We appreciate the professionalism and bravery of our officers and are thankful that all are alive. I am thankful for our city’s other first responders, including the National Park Service, the Garland County Sheriff's Department, Arkansas State Police, the Hot Springs Fire Department and LifeNet. Additionally, we appreciate the investigative efforts of the Arkansas State Police and Garland County Sheriff’s office to investigate this incident.”

“I am proud of our law enforcement officers who were able to quickly resolve this situation to protect the lives and safety of those in our historic downtown,” Hot Springs Mayor Pat McCabe said. “And I hope all will join me in prayers for Officer Smith and his family as he begins his healing process, as well as all the other officers involved in the response. While we cannot prevent every crime or dangerous situation, I am confident that the brave women and men of the Hot Springs Police Department will never cease in their efforts to maintain a healthy and safe community for everyone.”
