On Thursday, May 12, 2022, after the conclusion of the Hot Springs World Class High School graduation, a large fight broke out in an adjacent parking lot across from 400 Convention Boulevard.
During the fight, Hot Springs Police (HSPD) officers and Garland County deputies were on the scene attempting to defuse the situation when a single gunman began shooting into the crowd. HSPD officers returned fire on the suspect, later identified as Charles Johnson, 25. He was wounded, but able to flee the scene.
Four other individuals were shot during the incident and were transported to local hospitals. Michael Jordan, 39, of Hot Springs was transported to the hospital, where he died from his wounds. The other three victims were treated with non-life-threatening injuries.
Johnson was located and arrested at a local hospital while being treated for his wounds. He is being charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of first-degree battery.
The officer-involved shooting (OIS) is being investigated by the Arkansas State Police (ASP). The officers involved have been placed on Administrative Leave with pay until the conclusion of the OIS investigation.
